The Gunners defeated Manchester City at Wembley Stadium to win the 2023/2024 season community shield.

Arsenal defeated treble winners Manchester City on penalties to win the FA Community Shield title.

City dominated the first quarter of the game with fluid and calm possession play. However, the Gunners won the rest of the first period thanks to Declan Rice dropping deeper.

Pep’s side controlled the opening quarter, forcing Arsenal to play defensively the whole game without creating much of an effect. However, Arsenal were able to generate some chances that Kai Havertz failed to convert throughout the first half, causing Ortega to make a fine save and John Stones to make a superb stop off Martinelli’s effort.

In the 78th minute of the game, Manchester City star Cole Palmer ducked in from the right to time a flawless left-foot curler into the far top corner, breaking the scoreless tie. Aaron Ramsdale, the goalkeeper for Arsenal, later prevented Phil Foden from scoring.

However, in the dying seconds of the game, Arsenal substitute Leandro Trossard took control of a short corner, cut into the area, and had a shot at goal that was deflected beyond goalkeeper Stefan Ortega by defender Manuel Akanji, sending the game to penalties.

After Martin Odegaard opened the goal for Arsenal, Kevin De Bruyne slammed against the crossbar, causing the first surprise in the penalty shootout.

Arsenal’s Trossard and Bukayo Saka made no mistakes before Rodri’s shot was stopped by Aaron Ramsdale, allowing Fabio Vieira to score the winner and seal a 4-1 victory on penalties.

The win over Manchester City awarded Arsenal its 17th Community Shield, as well as Mikel Arteta’s second Community Shield and third trophy overall since joining the London club in 2019.
