Fulham FC completes the transfer of Super Eagle defender Calvin Bassey from Ajax

Published:

After striking an agreement with Ajax for a €21 million (£18 million) deal, the Cottagers have introduced Bassey as their newest summer signing.

The transaction is subject to international clearance, which the club expects to get early next week.

Bassey joined the Whites on a four-year contract from Eredivisie club Ajax Amsterdam on Friday night. The former Rangers defender departed Ajax after only a year after agreeing to terms with the London club after weeks of speculation.

Fulham signed the versatile defender ahead of another Premier League team, Brighton & Hove Albion.

Calvin Bassey spoke on the team website after his transfer to Fulham and said;

“I know how big of a club Fulham is. They always have quality players, they’re playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world, so I didn’t have to think much about it.

“It’s a London club as well, so it’s always a plus to go home! I’m happy it’s all done now and I can just focus on the football and help the team build on last season when they did amazing.”

Fulham’s Director of Football Tony Khan said;

“I’m thrilled to welcome Calvin Bassey to Fulham Football Club!

“He’s a young and versatile defender; a homegrown player who developed at Leicester City‘s academy before moving on to play for Rangers and then for Ajax, as well as Nigeria’s national team.

“Calvin’s been a top target for us, so we’re all delighted that he’s committed for the long term with Fulham, and we’re looking forward to watching him progress. Come on Fulham!”

Bassey spent just one season at Ajax. He made 39 appearances, with one goal and five assists to his name.

Bassey is a powerful defender with excellent aerial ball skills.

The combative 21-year-old is blessed with a strong appearance, and when he puts in a solid performance, he can make strikers uneasy.

He doesn’t have lightning speed, yet he sometimes helps the attack.
